Late 1960's - Early 1970's Vintage Gibson Mastertone RB-800 5-String Banjo w/ Gibson Hardshell Case - Serial No. 182172 Outstanding vintage Gibson Mastertone RB-800 five-string resonator banjo, serial number 182172. The RB-800 represented one of Gibson's most highly ornamented postwar Mastertone banjos and features an impressive combination of gold-plated and engraved hardware, elaborate mother-of-pearl fingerboard and peghead inlays, Mastertone fingerboard block, Gibson script peghead logo, pearl-style tuner buttons, engraved armrest, and ornate appointments throughout. The banjo features a beautifully figured resonator accented by multiple concentric rings and decorative purfling, along with the Gibson Mastertone Guarantee label inside the rim. The back of the peghead is stamped "182172" and "Made in U.S.A." Includes a Gibson-branded fitted hardshell case with blue plush interior and decorative leather banjo strap. A particularly attractive and highly appointed Gibson Mastertone that would make an excellent addition to a serious bluegrass instrument or Gibson collection. Condition: Presents very well overall with age-appropriate wear. Gold-plated hardware shows areas of wear/tarnishing consistent with age and use. Binding around the resonator exhibits cracking, deterioration and localized loss/damage as shown in the photographs.
